After three and a bit seasons at the helm, Gareth Southgate is sacked as Middlesbrough manager. Installed to replace England bound Steve Mclaren at the end of the 2005-06 season in which Boro reached the Old Cup semi final and the UEFA Cup Final, Southgates brief was to push up a few league positions each season and maybe win another cup. Premier League status was maintained in his first two seasons which was no mean feat given the talented players that left to be replaced by many not so talented but Boro succumbed to a gutless relegation in his third. Despite a decent start in The Championship, the Boro fans had began to vote with their feet as The Riverside became increasingly deserted on match days so Steve Gibson decided to act. Southgate was relieved of his duties ironically in the late evening hours following a 2-0 home win over Derby County that put Boro fourth in the league. When Steve Gibson called him in, he thought it was to talk about transfer targets.
