Methods and effects of exercise on spinal health vary depending on who you listen to.
On one side of the spectrum sits Dr Stuart McGill … a scientific icon with 296 published articles and over 1,500 citations on spinal care and core conditioning … who is a huge proponent of neutral spine. (minimal to no loaded flexion, extension or rotation)
On the other hand you have strength & conditioning coaches like Christopher Sommer, former professional US national gymnastics coach for 40 years and founder of Gymnasticbodies online training platform … who advocate the complete opposite.
Coach Sommer's work conflicts McGill with loaded spinal flexion movements like the Jefferson Curl. A movement by design that would have McGill waking at night in a cold sweat!
Both will say that their objectors backgrounds have skewed their personal opinions of the general public. McGill's background deals with people who have compromised bodies. Whereas Coach Sommer has worked primarily with elite athletes.
Both have produced great results in their field.
